Amazon.com Review
In her first novel, award-winning Indian screenwriter Arundhati Roy conjures a whoosh of wordplay that rises from the pages like a brilliant jazz improvisation. The God of Small Things is nominally the story of young twins Rahel and Estha and the rest of their family, but the book feels like a million stories spinning out indefinitely; it is the product of a genius child-mind that takes everything in and transforms it in an alchemy of poetry. The God of Small Things is at once exotic and familiar to the Western reader, written in an English that's completely new and invigorated by the Asian Indian influences of culture and language.

Product Description
Compared favorably to the works of Faulkner and Dickens, Arundhati Roy’s debut novel is a modern classic that has been read and loved worldwide. Equal parts powerful family saga, forbidden love story, and piercing political drama, it is the story of an affluent Indian family forever changed by one fateful day in 1969. The seven-year-old twins Estha and Rahel see their world shaken irrevokably by the arrival of their beautiful young cousin, Sophie. It is an event that will lead to an illicit liaison and tragedies accidental and intentional, exposing “big things [that] lurk unsaid” in a country drifting dangerously toward unrest. Lush, lyrical, and unnerving, The God of Small Things is an award-winning landmark that started for its author an esteemed career of fiction and political commentary that continues unabated.

5 out of 5 stars If you love a good train wreck...   March 2, 2010
E. Berg
... you'll love TGOST. Parts of this book sent chills down my spine. As in her political writings and speeches, Roy has a gift for tugging at your sense of injustice in literature as well.

Don't read this if you want an uplifting rosey picture that will put a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart. This is not that kind of story. But in a stark gutwrenching way, it is perfect, beautiful.

One thing to point out is Roy has a very unique narrative writing style. Irony and sarcasm are in no short supply. If you've heard her speak, you can easily hear the narration in her voice, and it makes it that much more beautiful. This juxtaposed with the books dark subject matter makes for kind of bitter irony I can't get enough of.

2 out of 5 stars Overly scented   February 18, 2010
Inabeth Vonn (Renton, WA)
The author gets credit for a heartfelt tale but I found the writing so overwrought and flowery. So much so that it detracted from the story.

I'm all for metaphors but this book trys too hard with a barrage of wordage. A perfect example of more is less. Sorry, I wished I could have liked this book.

5 out of 5 stars The God of Small Things   December 13, 2009
Stacy Alexander (US- Pacific NW)
It is rare that one comes across a writer with the intense word power as Arundhati Roy. "The man with her leaves no footsteps in the sand and no ripples in the water. He is the God of Small Things." This highly acclaimed book has been reviewed and revered by so many that it is difficult to find anything new to say about it. The lyrical quality of the author's style so truly comes from a searing intelligence that is unsurpassed in contemporary literature. Roy has a strong sense of justice that is not masked by the fiction genre. She knows how to tell a story in a straight-forward fashion the rings through the mind and bores into the heart. This is a book that will stay with the reader long into the night....long after the final page has been read and the book closed.

I have not read the book yet--it is for a November book club. But it was received in excellent condition and in a timely manner.

5 out of 5 stars Next read?   October 12, 2009
Night Bird (Sherwood Forest)

The God of Small Things is one of my all time favorite books even though I wouldn't expect to be drawn to this storyline.

It is beautifully written and oozes atmosphere, compared to other Booker Prize winners it stands tall, perhaps even above all the rest.

So what can you possibly read to follow this masterpiece?

I can't recommend a similar story that comes close but if like me, the literary style hooks you, a very different book and a very different but equally accomplished style can be found in The Shipping News.

Enjoy
